A Meaningful Maternity Session in Southern Minnesota

The Stories That Shape Motherhood | Honoring Every Journey

One of the greatest honors of being a photographer is being invited into someone’s story.

Every family who walks through the doors of my little country studio brings with them a journey — sometimes joyful and light, sometimes complicated and emotional, and often a mixture of both.

Over the years, I have photographed families from all walks of the motherhood journey. Some have experienced long seasons of waiting, some have endured heartbreaking miscarriages, some have walked the long road of IVF and fertility treatments, and others have carried the weight of unimaginable loss.

These stories are real.
They matter.
And they deserve to be honored.

Because motherhood doesn’t begin the moment a baby is born — it begins the moment love does.

For many families, that love has already carried them through incredibly difficult chapters.

I also want to acknowledge that conversations like this can sometimes feel heavy or even triggering. Pregnancy and motherhood hold so many different emotions for people, and every single mamas journey is different. Sometimes these topics are quietly avoided simply because we aren’t sure what the right words to say are.

But I believe these stories deserve space.

Not just the easy ones — all of them.

A Minnesota Maternity Session Filled With Meaning

This maternity session was especially close to my heart.

This beautiful mama has been part of the Andrea Mae Photography family for years, and somewhere along the way our sessions turned into a friendship. Her sweet family lovingly calls me “Auntie Andrea,” which is truly one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive.

But like many families, their journey hasn’t been without heartbreak.

This family carries the love of an angel baby — a tiny life who will always be part of their story. Though their little one isn’t here in the way they once dreamed, the love and connection remains deeply rooted in their hearts.

Moments like that hold so much meaning.

And when I photograph families like this, I’m always aware that I’m not just capturing what is seen in front of the camera — I’m honoring the chapters of their story that lead them to this moment.

Why This Matters So Much To Me

Part of the reason these stories sit so deeply in my heart is because I understand them personally.

Before welcoming my two boys into the world, I experienced a long period of waiting as well as two heartbreaking miscarriages of my own.

Loss like that changes you. It reshapes the way you look at motherhood, pregnancy, and the miracle of new life.

It’s something many women carry quietly, often without realizing just how many others share that same experience.

Because of that, when families step into my studio — especially expecting mothers — I hold their stories with great care.

I know that behind every baby bump, every newborn snuggle, and every sleepy yawn might be a journey that included years of hoping, waiting, fear, anxiety or even heartbreak.

And I want my studio to be a place where every part of that story is welcome.

Holding Space For Every Story

My goal has always been for families to feel supported the moment they walk through the door.

A place where they can slow down.
Take a deep breath.
And simply be present in the moment they are in.

Because every chapter matters.

The joyful ones.
The complicated ones.
And the ones that required incredible strength to reach.

Motherhood is not always a straight path, but every journey deserves to be seen and honored.

I’m so grateful to the families who trust me enough to share their stories — both the beautiful and the difficult.

It truly is the greatest privilege of this work.

And to this sweet mama and her growing family — thank you for allowing me to walk alongside your story.

It means the world to me.

Love, Auntie Andrea
